einer der weltweit führenden Energiekonzerne (v. a. Anbieter von Großhandels-, Energie-, Breidband- und Transportdienstleistungen) und größter Erdgashändler der USA; entstanden 1985 durch Fusion von Houston Natural Gas Company und InterNorth of Omaha Inc., Sitz: Houston (Texas). Der in mehr als 40 Ländern tätige Konzern erzielte 2000 mit 20 600 Beschäftigten einen Umsatz von 100,8 Mrd. US-$. - Im Dezember 2001 musste das hochverschuldete Unternehmen Konkurs anmelden und einräumen, dass in den letzten vier Jahren Bilanzen geschönt, d. h. Gewinne und Schulden nicht exakt ausgewiesen worden waren. Das amerikanische Justizministerium hat Anfang 2002 ein Ermittlungsverfahren gegen den Konzern (u. a. wegen des Verdachts auf Bilanzbetrug und Verstöße gegen das Wertpapierrecht) eingeleitet. Ein offizielles Untersuchungsverfahren zu den Hintergründen der größten Firmenpleite in der Geschichte der USA läuft auch im US-Kongress.
